Palaeontological science fiction is about lost worlds inhabited by dinosaurs and the distant ancestors of modern humans. It is about exciting journeys through the depths of time and encounters with prehistoric monsters that miraculously survived to our times. It is about stories of primitive people and the lives of creatures that millions of years ago turned into fossils... The novel "The Greatest Adventure" tells of an expedition into the unexplored and earthquake-prone region of Antarctica. Here, the brilliant and wealthy scientist Eric Lane, his daughter Edith, the eccentric archaeologist Drake, and their colorful companions discover a terrifying world flooded with monsters of savage evolution. "John Taine" is the literary pseudonym of the famous American mathematician E.T. Bell (1883-1960), author of a series of science fiction novels and books on the history of mathematics. D. Taine's novel "The Greatest Adventure" was first published in 1929. This translation is based on that edition and the separate edition of 1960. The division into chapters and their titles correspond to a shortened publication in the magazine "Famous Fantastic Mysteries" (June 1944), from which the cover art and other illustrations by artist Lawrence (L. Stevens) were taken. The summary is based on the 1960 edition.
